Famous for its vineyards, you can visit the wineries of the valley and learn how wine is made. Explore the vineyards, sample some award winning wines and dine at one of the gourmet restaurants in this area.
Yosemite National Park
With over 3000 square kilometres to explore, you can visit Yosemite National Park over and over again and explore a different area every time. The beautiful forest of Sequoia trees, against the backdrop of the mountains makes this one of the beautiful places to take a hike. You mustn’t forget to take your camera, as there are some amazing photos to be taken here.

Muir Woods National Monument
Another great spot for walkers is the Muir Woods. Filled with huge Redwood trees, you’ll find many trails to follow and explore. There’s a real magical feel to these woods, and if you’re looking for the perfect place to stop and take in the view, head up the Ben Johnson and Dipsea trails for panoramic ocean views.
Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park
Set in 8000 acres, the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park has hiking trails for all abilities. You can explore on your own, or take a guided walk and learn more about the history of the area, the plants and the wildlife.
This pretty historic city is surrounded by wineries. Explore the city, sample some wines and admire the scenery on your day trip out of San Francisco. There’s also a weekly farmers market here that’s well worth a visit for local crafts and produce.
There’s something rather creepy yet compelling about the infamous prison set on Alcatraz Island. Take a boat out to the island and the guided tour will give you the history and some fascinating stories about prison life here. If you want the ultimate eerie experience, take the tour on an evening. The crowds thin and the darkness descends, it’s not for the faint hearted! Don’t forget to take a look back across to the mainland to see the stunning San Francisco skyline.
Angel Island State Park
Angel Island is the largest island in San Francisco Bay yet it’s nearly always quiet and peaceful. If you’re looking for a romantic day out then head to the Angel island State Park and take a picnic with you.
The beauty of raw nature really shines through on this 90 mile stretch of unspoilt coastline. It’s the perfect place for a long hike with amazing views all the way.
